In a perfect world, we’d all have indestructible doors and windows. Until that day arrives, we have to deal with small window problems.

Window Problems

Fortunately, a lot of these problems can be fixed easily, and you can count on your local experts at window repair in Detroit, MI, if all else fails. We strongly recommend that before you attempt to do any of the fixes mentioned below, check the paperwork first (or ask your contractor) if your window is still within warranty.

Here are four common window problems and how to fix them.

1. Windows Won’t Stay Closed or Open

Start with the usual suspects – the hardware. It could be as simple as tightening the screws on the hinges and spraying on some lubricant; or it could be beyond repair and will need to be replaced. If you have hung windows, check if the sash support system needs adjustment. Casement window cranks might just need a single drop of lubricant to get it working.

2. Broken Glass

Never handle broken window glass with your bare hands. Wear protective gear at all times and keep the children out of the way.

Start with cleaning glass pieces with a brush. Tap the sash to shake loose pieces off. To prevent more glass from falling off, cut two pieces of cardboard in the size of the broken pane (make one pair per broken pane). Use masking tape to secure one layer of cardboard on each side. If the sash is removable, then carefully remove it from the frame and take it out for repair; call for professional help otherwise.

3. Drafty Windows

Temperature changes usually expose leaks in the window. These are usually fixed by having the weatherstripping replaced. Also check if the windows are properly seated in their frames – if not, this could mean the sash and/or frame is out of shape. At most, you might need to have the entire window replaced by a local expert on windows in Detroit.

4. Broken Locks and Latches

This could pose a serious security problem if not addressed. Fortunately, window locks are the easiest to replace. When buying replacement locks, make sure you get hardware that will match the pre-existing drilled holes to save you time drilling. Ask your Detroit replacement windows contractor first if they offer the same or similar locks before checking online stores.
